Craig Stevens, a professional from Dallas, Ga., and Jeff Belk, an amateur from Marietta, Ga., share medalist honors and earn spots in the U.S. Senior Open after posting 4-under-par 68 scores in an 18-hole qualifier at The Standard Club. Joining the medalists include amateur Jack Hall of Sea Island, Ga., and professional Mike Hulbert of Orlando, Fla. Hall and Hulbert each finished at 2-under-par 70.
Due to a nearly two hour weather delay Monday afternoon at The Standard Club, play was postponed to Tuesday morning once the sun set and it was deemed to dark to continue. At 7:30 Tuesday morning, four players tied at 1-under-par 71 returned to the course for a playoff to determine the first and second alternate positions.
Professionals Al Jernigan of Gray, Ga., Rick Lewallen of Kannapolis, N.C., Jack Larkin of Atlanta, Ga., and amateur James Stormont of Atlanta, Ga., played off for the two alternate positions. With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Jernigan secured the first alternate spot, and with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole, Lewallen clinched the second.
The Standard Club played to 6,800 yards and a par of 72.
The 34th annual U.S. Senior Open Championship will be held at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Neb., July 11-14, 2013. Entries were open to any professional, or any amateur with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4, who turns 50 on or before July 11. The U.S. Senior Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
